Please release me

A method of stress relief pioneered in South Africa is now available to pain-sufferers in Edinburgh.

Body Stress Release, or BSR, works by helping the body release stored stresses. When the point of stress overload is reached, instead of the stress being released, it becomes stored within the body as `body stress'. The body then takes protective action through automatic reflexes which cause adjacent and overlying muscles to constrict the area.

In time, when the body is required to take greater defensive action, stiffness may become noticeable, ultimately leading to postural distortion, loss of flexibility, pain or numbness. A person with body stress may also feel tense, tired and lacking in energy and enthusiasm for life.

While BSR is not a diagnosis or treatment of any specific illness or condition, it may assist with a range of symptoms, including: back pain and sciatica; sports injuries; neck, shoulder, knee and ankle problems; Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and tennis elbow; headaches and migraines; heartburn and indigestion; respiratory conditions; menstrual irregularities; pregnancy and childhood disorders; and weak immune system.

Body Stress Release is a gentle procedure, carried out while the client is fully clothed and lying down. A series of tests identifies the exact locations of body stress, while the practitioner observes the reaction of muscles to indicate where and in what direction the tension lies. The stress is then gently released by means of light but definite pressure designed to encourage the body to `let go'.

An appointment lasts approximately 30 minutes. The process can provide instant relief or may require a number of sessions, depending on the severity and duration of the stress.
